Sainsbury’s tiger bread re-named giraffe bread after letter from girl, 3

Lily Robinson wrote a letter to the supermarket chain telling bosses their patterned loaf should be re-named giraffe bread.

The letter, sent in May 2011, was received by Sainsbury’s customer manager Chris King, who loved Lily’s ideas.

He replied: ‘Renaming tiger bread giraffe bread is a brilliant idea – it looks much more like the blotches on a giraffe than the stripes on a tiger, doesn’t it?

He went on to explain the origins of the bread’s name, saying: ‘It is called tiger bread because the first baker who made it a looong time ago thought it looked stripey like a tiger. read more…

‘Breading’: The bizarre new world wide web cat craze causing a stir online

It may be hard to believe but cat lovers everywhere are beginning to embrace this crazy trend.

Breading fans first take a slice of bread, drill a massive round hole in the centre before placing it around their pet to create a mane effect.

Pictures of cats dressed in wholemeal, plain and multi-seed bread are popping up across the web, being promoted by blogging sites and posted on Twitter.

It’s the latest ‘internet meme’, a term used to describe a trend which spreads quickly across the web, to emerge following last year’s planking craze. read more…

Thief captured on film by security camera he ended up stealing

The brazen man is yet to be identified by police, despite his face being clearly captured as he nabbed the security camera from a hospital in California.

‘This guy just propped himself up and dismantled the camera and stole it,’ Bakersfield Police Detective Scott Miller told Huffington Post.

The area has recently been hit by a crime wave of security camera thefts, which, according to police, are attributed to thieves and drug dealers who want to use the surveillance devices for their own homes. read more…

Bismarck’s voice was captured by Adelbert Theodor Edward Wangemann, a German who was working as an assistant to Edison on a project to make phonographs marketable to the ordinary public.

The complete transcript has now been released for the first time since the recording in October 1889.

In the scratchy recitals on wax cylinder phonograph records the prince can be heard reciting the first strophes of the songs In Good Old Colony Times and Gaudeamus igitur, as well as the beginning of the poem Als Kaiser Rotbart lobesam. read more…

Reminiscent of film Cool Runnings, Bruno Banani, the son of a Tongan coconut farmer, was destined to slide into the history books as Tonga’s first Olympic competitor in the sport.

Banani’s triumph would be fulfilling the wishes of Tongan Princess Royal, Salote Mafile’o Pilolevu Tuita, who had always dreamed about a citizen of her country entering the cold weather race.

EU rides to the rescue of White Van Man

According to Autonet, the specialist insurance broker, the average van insurance premium for men aged 22 and under has fallen by 13.5pc to stand at £2,210, compared with £2,550 a year ago.

Females in the same category saw their average premium fall by 21pc from £2,530 in 2011 to just £2,000 in January 2012.

Research also indicated that males aged between 23 and 29 paid premiums of £1,135 a year ago, but this day the cost of the same cover had fallen to £1,118 – a difference of 1.5pc. read more…

IF you owned a burrito store, and your burrito store was robbed by three men, how would you catch them?

One web-savvy business has used YouTube, Twitter and Facebook to play detective.

A Boloco store in Boston was robbed at the weekend when three men broke in and raided the safe.

Boloco is offering a $1000 reward to help catch the thieves, and even set up this video on Facebook to crack the case.

"We added music to the video (because that is what we do), but it was haunting even without it," the company’s Facebook status read.

Water-skiers set new world record in Australia

The event took place in the idyllic surroundings of Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania, with skiers from all around the globe coming together for the record attempt.

Alexandria Seaton, 12, was the youngest of the original 154 skiers who took part in the event, with nine unlucky hopefuls unable to hold out until the end.

The water enthusiasts were pulled one nautical mile across the lake by World Heritage Cruises catamaran Eagle, equipped with a 3000 horsepower engine.

It beats their own previous world record set in 2010 when 114 skiers were towed along at the same location. read more…

CNN apologises for placing London in Norfolk during news report

Americans are not known for their fantastic sense of geography, but uprooting the capital of England and placing it in an entirely different region is a pretty huge gaffe – and the screen shot has predictably gone viral.

One eagle-eyed viewer spotted the mistake, snapped a picture and uploaded it to Twitter where the image was rapidly retweeted.

Tweeters quickly took to the microblogging site to comment on the mistake, with one quipping: ‘Hilarious, Norfolk the new London’. read more…
