Australian chef batters world record for tallest pancake stack

Culinary expert Andy beat a 2008 record set in Croatia after building a 76cm tall stack of 60 delicious treats at the Pancake Parlour in Melbourne.

The leaning tower of pancakes eventually toppled over, but only after the record was confirmed by Guinness officials.

The chef flips over 100,000 pancakes every year at the popular restaurant where he has been working for over 25 years.

Andy admitted a lot of hard work has gone into beating last year’s effort, revealing to local broadcaster ABC: ‘We tried last year and we got to 61 centimetres and did pretty well.

‘We thought we had give it another go and this year we actually did it.

‘We had a lot of practices, spent about 50 hours, probably used another quarter of a ton of buckwheat mix, and we finally got to the point where we needed to go.’

Pancake Day is a long-standing tradition across the globe which sees millions of households use up the last of their fatty foods in preparation for Lent.

In 2008, Bram Zwiers broke a record after tossing 405 pancakes and in 2009 Steve Hamilton of the USA claimed a new record by making a whopping 956 pancakes in one hour.

Last week over 900 Sheffield University students set a new pancake flipping record, raising thousands of pounds for various charities.
