Factfile: the world’s tallest people

Here is a list of facts about the world’s gentle giants:

:: Leonid Stadnyk from Ukraine was thought to be the tallest man in the world at 8ft 5in, but he refused to be officially measured for a world record. He told reporters that his height was God’s ”punishment”.

:: The tallest man in medical history is Robert Pershing Wadlow, who was 8ft 11in. His greatest recorded weight was 222.71kg (35st 1lb), and at the age of nine he could carry his father up the stairs.

:: There was excitement among hospital staff in China when they treated Zhao Liang who was 2.46m (just under 8ft 1in) in height. The 27-year-old’s mother said her hair had turned white from worrying about how his height would affect his future.

:: Former tallest man in the world Bao Xishun was called upon to save two dolphins in 2006 by using his 1.06 metre-long arms to remove pieces of plastic from their stomachs.

:: Neil Fingleton, the tallest man in Britain at 7ft 7in, consumes 8,000 calories per day.

:: The Tall Persons Club was set up in 1991 with the purpose of ”providing information for and promoting the interests of tall people”. It gets around 100 letters per day, mostly from those struggling to find clothes, shoes, beds and other furniture.

:: India’s tallest woman Svetlana Singh, who is 7ft 2in, saw her baby grow to the size of a five-year-old at the age of just 10 months. Son Karan fed up to 20 times per day and was already 3ft 2in at such a young age.

:: The late Sandy Allen, who was the world’s tallest woman for several years at 7ft 7in, was first discovered when she wrote to Guinness World Records in 1974 complaining that she had no social life. Although she had an operation to stop her growth three years later, she regularly spoke in public about her height in a bid to make children feel more comfortable with being different.
