Looking for love? It’s not always what it’s cracked up to be.

When love goes wrong, it goes on the internetPictures: Love and marriage fail galleryPictures: Hot Valentine’s Day travel deals

AS Valentine's Day approaches, Aussie couples are preparing to celebrate their love with romantic dinners, chocolates and flowers.

But single people can take heart in knowing that often love goes horribly wrong. And when it does, you can be sure that someone will post it on the internet.

YouTube is full of videos of failed proposals.

One poor lover asked a friend to hide behind a bush to film his proposal. Excitedly he tied the ring to a red love heart balloon. When his girlfriend approached he handed her the balloon, strolled hand in hand with her then got down on one knee to propose. But in the excitement of the moment, the bride-to-be let go of the balloon and the ring floats away into the sky leaving the groom to chase it hopelessly and his girl yelling: “why did you tie it to the balloon?”. Not a good start.

A proposal at a basketball game is also asking for public humiliation. After dropping to his knees to propose to his girlfriend in front of a packed crowd, one poor lover was told “no, not now”. His girlfriend runs from the court, out the doors leaving him, beer in hand, to be consoled by the team mascot.

Dating too is fraught with problems.

The Courier Mail reported:  "Tara" went for a dream date with her on-line love. One thing led to another and the couple ended up in bed. Afterwards he turned to her and said, "that was great but it’s helped me realise, I still prefer men".

"Mandy" has given up world wide web dating after arranging to meet an on-line friend for a date. After waiting for 45 minutes in the rain she gave up. He later told her that he had met an old girlfriend on the bus on his way to the date and they decided to give it another go.

But it could be worse, The Courier-Mail reported how on-line scammers  are using three tiny words - "I love you" - to unlock the bank accounts of vulnerable Queenslanders.

Purporting to be from Nigeria, the culprits used match-maker websites to fleece the lovelorn. One of the hapless victims, Ralph Thomason, lost $20,000.

If you do make it to a wedding, don’t  assume that your day will be perfect. The world wide web is full of “wedding fail” pics of grooms falling asleep, beach wedding pics with nude sunbathers in the background, and wedding cakes that look like towers of poo.

Vows can be tricky too. One bride landed herself on You Tube after she stated “my love and lust for you” instead of my love and trust for you.

Take a look at the reaction below:

Passion doesn’t always go wrong – sometimes it just goes away.  Singles out there this Valentine’s Day can take heart in the knowledge that Aussie couples would in fact prefer to curl up with a good book than a good lover.

When quizzed by Swedish furniture giant IKEA, one in three Aussies stated that if given an extra hour in the day, they would prefer to read a book than get cosy with their other half.

The results of the on-line poll show 35 per cent of the 1057 respondents would opt to get stuck into a novel if they had the extra time, while only 20 per cent chose one-on-one time with their partners.

But it’s apparently the nation’s women who secretly yearn for paperbacks over passion, with 45 per cent saying they would opt for a good book while just 14 per cent would select private time in the bedroom.

Men were less likely to look for literature over love. Twenty-six per cent stated they would rather an hour of romance, while 25 per cent favoured reading.
