Man proposes to girlfriend in cinema with Lou Reed video before Avatar

Kerrie Richardson, 27, thought she was going to spend the evening watching Avatar, the Oscar-winning Hollywood blockbuster.

But Bryan Hughes, 35, had arranged for the cinema to show a video with all her nearest and dearest singing lines from the 1970s classic.

Mr Hughes, who had made an excuse to go to the lavatory, reappeared at the front of the cinema to get down on one knee and pop the question with an engagement ring.

The packed audience – who had been sitting in the dark disguised with 3-D glasses – got up to cheer, revealing themselves as 50 of Miss Richardson’s loved ones.

After she accepted the proposal, the group then left the real cinema audience to watch Avatar while they celebrated with an impromptu party.

Miss Richardson stated afterwards: “I was shaking and absolutely overwhelmed by Bryan’s incredibly romantic gesture.

“Just before the lights dimmed Bryan went to the lavatory. I was stuck on my own when the film started and I thought ‘Typical, he is going to miss the beginning’.

“The first scene was the back of a man’s head and I thought ‘That looks like Bryan’s head’.

“I almost fainted when he turned round and it was him.”

“Now we have set a date for a wedding next year and I could not be happier.”

Mr Hughes, a technical support officer from Basingstoke in Hants, had arranged with the head projectionist at his local Vue Cinema to show his film.
