Pick up a slice of the toasting action with Britain’s first pop-up pizza

The pizzas, the first of their kind on the high street, will be available for £2 and have a pre-cooked base.

The appetisers come in a ‘pocket’ that will prevent the contents spilling out into the toaster.

But critics have stated the new snacks may lead to people over-indulging, with a typical slice of the pizza containing 190 to 250 calories, which is twice as much as that of a slice of toast.

Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, said: ‘There is nothing that states that pizza can’t be healthy, and the ingredients look intriguing. The feature I like most about the idea is the portion size.

‘There’s a limit to what can be fitted into a toaster and that should be the limit for a snack for anyone.

‘But there is a danger that people will be tempted to have a second one and they shouldn’t. One is nearly definitely enough.’

But M&S denies the miniature snack will be unhealthy:  ‘It is less indulgent than a typical pizza and well balanced in terms of fat’, spokeswoman Claire Hodgson said.

‘They’re ready in less than four minutes, it doesn’t get much faster – and heating in a toaster means no soggy bases from the microwave.

‘It’s a great option for people who want a slice of pizza at home or in the office, but not the temptation of a whole pizza.’
