UK's Prince Philip was accused of bungling by The Sun after he asked a sea cadet whether she worked in a strip club.

The 88-year-old Duke of Edinburgh was speaking to cadets at a barracks when he asked Navy cadet Elizabeth Rendle what she did for a living.

"I told him that I worked in a club and then he asked ‘What, a strip club?’," nightclub barmaid Elizabeth, 24, said.

"I stated ‘no’ and then he said, ‘It’s a bit too cold this day anyway’."

The Duke was with the Queen on a tour of Devon and had stopped off at Wyvern Barracks in Exeter, where he met Rendle.

His comment was laughed off by Rendle, who trains young cadets in her home town of Barnstaple.

"We were all laughing and I did not take any offence," she said.

"I think he was just putting people at their ease."

The Sun reported the Duke is known for making humiliating remarks.

In 1986 he told a group of British students in China: "If you stay here much longer, you will all be slitty-eyed."

In 1995 at Oban, Scotland – home to a famous whisky distillery – he asked a driving instructor: "How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to get them through the test?"

And during a tour of Australia in 2002 he asked an Aborigine if they still threw spears at each other.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the Exeter incident.
